About What's On The Box?

What's On The Box is a newish site that was created for lovers of TV. We cover scripted series, newsworthy issues and documentaries. Nothing regarding TV is off limits, however we will never, ever discuss reality TV.

This blog is an open forum for all TV fans who want to read about their favourite TV shows and share their opinions with other like minded TV fans. If you believe your favourite show is a must see TV show, then let us know about it.

Everyone who visits this site is welcome to have their say by posting their own article, photos or videos. Talk about the TV shows you love or tell us about the shows that you think suck and should not be on TV. Drop us a line via the contact form or jump on our Facebook page and send us a message. Our writers are more than welcome here to share their opinions as honestly as they like, however all we ask is that everyone is respectful of other poster's opinions'.

I started this blog to discuss the TV shows I love, so rather than make a site for each individual TV show, it made sense to make one for all of them. I do manage a Grey's Anatomy blog which is quite popular. If you are interested in writing at Grey's Anatomy Addicts, drop me a line via the contact box or on the Grey's Facebook page. Anyone who contribute to this site or any of my other blogs, gets their own byline and link to their website.

Obviously I and the writers who contribute to this site are going to talk about the TV shows they love the best, this is why we would love everyone to contribute, even if all you want to do is leave a comment requesting spoilers on your favourite TV show that we do not cover.

Lately a lot of the articles and discussion have been about Person of Interest and most importantly the recent news that CBS have cancelled this excellent show. There is also a campaign happening to save this show and convince Netflix or another TV Network to pick up POI. If you are interested in this, let us know so we can let you know how you can join the campaign.

We are now beginning to add articles and discussions regarding other shows. Recently an article was added via Spoiler TV about The CW's, the 100 and the recent death of the character, Lexa. The creator of The 100 recently reached out to the Clexa fans to talk about the death of the character. This article was shared on What's On The Box, just the other day.

We have some excellent reviews coming up that are being posted courtesy of the Spoiler TV reviewers of various shows. And we also have a couple of articles currently being written about The Walking Dead, Scandal, The Catch (Shonda Rhime's new show) and The Family.

So whether you are fans of Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Scandal, Chicago PD, The Night Shift, Supernatural; just to name a few. If you would like us to include you favourite show on this site, just let us know.

Goodbye Private Practice

      

It was highly likely that when Kate Walsh announced that it was her intention to leave that Private Practice would be axed. Instead of ABC ordering the usual twenty two episodes, they went for thirteen, this was probably done to get an idea of ratings and to make a decision based on what the show was making in advertising. Shonda Rhimes, announced via an interview that Private Practice would finish and that episode thirteen would be their last. The last hurrah for the characters at Seaside Wellness was a really great finale. No big death, or tragedy that Shonda Rhimes is famous for on Grey’s Anatomy, just a well rounded wrap up for her characters.

Shonda Rhimes wrote on her website that she had never ended a TV show before, so she was in unfamiliar territory. However for someone who has no experience in writing a Series Final, she did extremely well. It probably helped that she likely had fair warning that Private Practice would not continue after Kate Walsh left. And one wonders if Kate saw it coming and jumped ship, but she has other irons in the fire so to speak; so this is unlikely. Shonda had the time to dedicate to giving the series, Grey’s Anatomy’s spin off a fitting ending. 

Would Private Practice gone onto good or better ratings without Kate Walsh, and had they gotten the twenty-two episode, they would have been minus Benjamin Bratt too; as Addison and Jake married in the Finale, so if Addison left Seaside then Jake would surely have to follow. Or would she have gone a different way and broke up the couple, leaving Addie to ride off into the sunset with Henry. Who knows? And it’s all speculation; Private Practice would likely have tanked without the lead character. 

The other actors are great, but none of them really had enough popularity among viewers to carry the show. Kadee Strickland is one character that comes to mind to take over Kate’s role as lead actress, because she is popular with the fans and absolutely, stunningly, beautiful. Many Grey’s Anatomy fans would have tuned out, because of Addison. She was popular on Grey’s Anatomy and many fans of that show wanted her to stay and get together with Mark (McSteamy) Sloan or Alex. 

So it’s goodbye to one of my favourite medical shows, and I will just have to get the rest of the seasons on DVD and watch them when ever I want a fix of Addison Montgomery magic or just want to perve on Jake Riley; what a hottie.

I am really surprised to realise how much I miss Private Practice. Now that the last episode has gone to air; and it’s not on TV anymore; I really miss Addison Montgomery and her friends. I loved Kate Walsh in that role, and she is terrific actress, so I am hoping she will be on my TV on something good soon. 

Hopefully she will come back to Seattle Grace to stir up things with some of the characters there, now that would be entertaining and she can bring her new husband too, Benjamin Bratt is obscenely gorgeous. After six years Private Practice has ended. More than a month ago now; the final Private Practice episode was aired in the United States. 

Micheal Jackson's Doctor Wants Out Of Prison

Conrad Murray, the doctor responsible for Michael Jackson's death requested a release from prison pending his appeal. Should the judge set him free?

Since when does this happen? I’ve never heard of this happening; at least in Australia anyway. Once a defendant is convicted and sentenced to prison it’s game over. If the defendant wants to appeal that is their right, but to expect a release from prison pending that appeal making it to court is madness. I’ve never heard of this happening until now.

A Jury Found Murray Guilty

Conrad Murray was convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter on the 7th November 2011 in Los Angeles. The twelve jurors deliberated for eight hours and came back with a unanimous verdict of guilty, beyond reasonable doubt. On the 29th November 2011, Judge Pastor sentenced Murray to four years imprisonment and revoked his medical license.

Murray was Sentenced to Four Years in Prison

Many fans have been shocked by this story, saying that Murray has some nerve. Huffington Post reported in November last year during sentencing that Judge Pastor told the court that Murray had shown no remorse for his crime and he also considered Murray was a danger to society. He was sentenced to four years; however it is likely that he will only serve about two years because he will be eligible for parole at this time. Many fans are wondering why this guy can’t just take his punishment on the chin and do his time.

Conrad Murray is the person responsible for the death of one of the world’s biggest superstars; Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. No matter which way his lawyers want to argue Murray’s conviction and sentence; this man admitted to giving Michael Jackson injections of propofol in the six weeks before he died. That same drug was found in his system during the autopsy.

Murray chose not to take the stand and defend his actions during the trial, so how is he possibly going to convince a judge to let him out of prison? Obviously there are reasons, but it’s difficult to understand. By the time this appeal is heard in the courts, his sentence may well be over. So what is this about? It could be about his medical license; however after what Murray has done, you would think his career as a doctor would be finished. Or it may well be about the civil law suits he has to face up to. If his verdict is overturned then there might be no grounds to sue. The possibilities are endless, but asking to be let out of prison is over the line.

How Will Murray Defend his Actions at Appeal

Speculation is rampant about how Murray will defend himself at the appeal. It has also been reported that he intends to represent himself as he cannot afford a lawyer. If he represents his own appeal, he will be required to answer questions from the prosecuting attorneys.

According to TMZ.com Murray is claiming that he had an unfair trial. The court papers read that during the trial there was improper exclusion of defence evidence and witnesses that resulted in violating the defendant’s State and Constitutional rights to due process, to present a defence and to the effective assistance of counsel.

Murray is apparently in solitary confinement and has to wear chains when visiting with his lawyer; however it was revealed via Huffington Post that he is in solitary for his own protection and wearing chains is standard for all prisoners. Does he really expect a judge and the public to feel sorry for him? Seriously; this guy needs to stop whining.

Public Opinion is Divided

Fans commenting in relation to this news on TMZ.com have been extremely vocal in their opinions about Murray and Michael Jackson. Some fans believe Murray should stay in jail for as long as possible, some think he should have gotten the death penalty, and others believe Murray did the world a favour and deserves a medal; and that’s an issue for another article.

No matter what did or did not happen in court, Murray was found guilty and sent to prison. He was responsible for the death of one of the most loved people in the world and he may well be safer in prison. The upcoming appeal which will most likely take a year to get to court will be interesting none the less.

A Tribute to the Late, Great George Harrison

Some musicians might say that the song Something was one of the greatest love ballads written in the past fifty years; in-fact Frank Sinatra, who was no fan of rock and roll said those exact words.  One of the most powerful love songs in music history, so simple, yet tender and emotive.  It is absolutely fitting that this song was written by a former Beatle, the late, great George Harrison.  Most Beatles fans will never forget the day they heard about his death and George Harrison’s untimely, tragic passing on at only fifty-eight years of age has left fans feeling deep sadness, a huge sense of loss and a determination to hang on to those vivid memories of the glory days.  The magical memories of Harrison’s Beatles days and his subsequent career thereafter will be with the fans forever as will the precious gift of his music.  The song Something was probably his best work, along with Here Comes the Sun, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, and My Sweet Lord.  All remarkable, influential, artistic and thought provoking songs.  ‘Typically George,’ some might say.  John Lennon was even quoted as saying that Something was the best track on the album Abbey Road.

George Harrison was portrayed as the quiet, enigmatic Beatle.  What is it they say about the quiet ones?  George Harrison was an extremely remarkable person, who lived ‘a charmed life.’  He was part of the biggest, most popular bands in music history.  His music can be described as very spiritual, uplifting and moving, not as romantic and hearfelt like some of McCartney’s ballads.  Just different, exceptional in it’s own way.

McCartney and Lennon would have to be the two most talented singer/song writers this world has ever seen and there is little doubt that we will never witness talents like theirs again.  Of the four Beatles, they were so different in their style of musical ability and personality.  Paul McCartney, the romanticist, John Lennon the peace-maker, the mischievous and lovable drummer Ringo Starr and George Harrison the spiritualist.  Put them all together in a rock n roll band spanning almost a decade and the rest as they say is history.  Their coming together, produced some of the most significant and inspiring music that would affect people in so many different ways.  Music that was impossible not to dance to, or to sing to, or to grab a guitar and jam with.  Most music lovers can relate to just sitting back and letting those familiar haunting chills take over, a feeling that would stir the soul and invoke a passion that was just indefinable.

Getting back to George Harrison, his death came almost twenty one years to the day that John Lennon was shot.  Lennon’s death affected all Beatles fans more than they would care to remember, as it was such a huge shock.  In Harrison’s case, the fans knew he was gravely ill and that his death was inevitable.  All the same it is unbearable to think that he’s gone and now only two Beatles remain.  Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.  Its possible that, McCartney and Starr hate being referred to as the two remaining Beatles.  George Harrison was once quoted as saying that he hated being referred to as a Beatle.  McCartney and Starr’s lives have gone in different directions since the good old days in the sixties.  They have fulfilled many goals in their careers and they probably wish that all Beatle’s fans would stop living in the past.  The problem is; the fans cannot and never will and there are different generations of fans who love the Beatles.

The Beatles probably have at least three generations of fans now.  Many of their fans were not even born when the Beatles split up and went their separate ways.  Nevertheless, McCartney and Starr would be correct, it isn’t healthy to live in the past, but reminiscing is a different story.

Harrison was the first of the Beatles to reap the success of their breakup, with his music that never made it onto Beatles’ albums and what wonderful music it is.  All Thing Must Pass is a brilliant album.  The Beatles had really gone as far as they were going to as a foursome, the demise of the group cannot be blamed or pin pointed to any one person or reason.  Over the space of almost ten years the Beatles created two hundred odd songs and many were hits.  Most of the Beatle’s albums went to number one on the charts.  Harrison was quoted as saying in an interview that the wives of the band members did create rifts, but it is possible he was referring to the times after the band had split, for instance he recalled a time when he visited Lennon in New York, where he felt that Lennon was trying to tell him something.

George Harrison realised his potential a long time before McCartney and Lennon even considered including much of Harrison’s music on a Beatles album.  After splitting with model Pattie Boyd, whom the song “Something” relates to.  He married for the second time, to secretary Olivia Arias and they had a son, Dhani.  Dhani would be Harrison’s only child.  His solo career was the first to take off and the success of his album ‘All Things Must Pass’ was phenomenal.  He was the first Beatle to release a number one hit with My Sweet Lord.  He proceeded to make many more albums and he also became involved in the movies as a producer, he founded the company Handmade films, that made the Monty Python movies, amongst others.  What is really ironic is that George was the quiet Beatle and yet the most successful directly after the split and what’s more it is possible that his many other successes such as his career producing films and the success with the Travelling Wilbury’s in the 1990’s were not even acknowledged by many fans, possibly only the most dedicated fans.  The remaining three Beatles eventually reunited in the 1990’s when Anthology was released and tracks previously not released were performed by George, Paul and Ringo, including two songs written by Lennon, “Real Love” and “Free as a Bird.”  George Harrison had more talent still there to give the world and yet fate chose to cut his wonderful life so dreadfully short.

This is a matter of opinion, but “Something” will probably be the song that stands out amongst all the music he wrote whilst with the Beatles and as a solo artist, for its moving quality and simplicity.  This song sums up everything in three small verses and a forceful, intense bridge.  “You’re asking me will my love will grow, I don’t know, I don’t know!”  The way Harrison executes these lyrics and his brilliant guitar work throughout the song just blows the mind.  George Harrison was a special human being, a person with rare gifts and a beautiful mind.  Man, he was Something!
